Gardening is a kind of disease. It infects you, you cannot escape it. When you go visiting, your eyes rove about the garden; you interrupt the serious cocktail drinking because of an irresistible impulse to get up and pull a weed. ~ Lewis Gannit
Hi, my name is Melissa and welcome to A Farm of your Home.
Have you ever dreamed of escaping to the country and growing your own food?
But for now, I’m an urban dweller. I live in Perth, Western Australia with Husband, our three fast-growing-kids and black cat Jinx.
A few years ago, I decided it was time to stop wishing for the hobby farm, and make the most of the dirt in my own backyard.
So, A Farm of Your Home began. And an obsession followed.
My three raised vegetable beds in the backyard multiplied into over a dozen raised beds in my front yard.
An enormous worm farm was followed by a chicken coop.
I began my own seed bank.
A greenhouse popped up.
Three compost bins moved in.
A frog pond became a necessity.
Then an apiary, with a hive full of honey bees.
Even as I write, I’m eyeing off the neglected corners of my garden, conspiring to turn it into fertile ground.
Today, I grow over 100 edible plant varieties in my suburban backyard.
I’ve lost count of my failures! I live in a hot, dry climate, where following conventional garden rules can spell disaster. I’ve researched, tested and experimented.
Success or shambles, I’ll share it all with you!
My garden is my go-to happy place. I workout, relax, play, eat, parent and thrive in my little urban oasis.
I love to find weird and wonderful heirloom edible varieties.
I adore compost.
I nearly expire from excitement when it rains. Thunderstorms make me delirious.
Harvesting is bliss.
I have big plans, because a farm is never really “finished” is it? If you’ve met me before, you’ll notice a new look to the blog, with more features planned. Watch this space!
I sincerely hope you’ll pop in and enjoy hanging out with me.
And in turn, I hope I can help you create A Farm of Your Home, of your very own.
