The Recycler’s Paradise

“Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to disperse because we’ve been ignorant of their value.” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller*

Today, My husband took the day off to help me celebrate my birthday.  ”The day is yours my darling!” he exclaimed “I am at your beck and call.  We shall go where you want, do what you want, and I will happily grant your every wish!”

So naturally, I chose to go to Balcatta Salvage.

I had heard that this suburban waste station was a mecca for all those pickers like me out there. Stories of fabulous finds and bargains had repeatedly made their way to me and I knew I had to check it out for myself.

I had made myself a bit of a list of things to look for.  I was after some kitschy chandeliers, anything vintage silver plated, bedheads for trellises, interesting glassware for terrariums or pots and of course anything else  garden related.  I was not too disappointed!  No vintage silver but I did find the following….

My old, new wicker planter for my potatoes.

  • 3 tier potting shelf
  • Garden hose with wind-up reel and spray nozzle
  • 23 large and tall bamboo poles
  • Assorted pots
  • Letterbox (for the entrance to the greenhouse of course!)
  • Bamboo steamer (to germinate new seeds)
  • Bamboo base of a former coffee table, which will make the perfect frame for planting potatoes.

I was thrilled to get it all for $25.00!

Before going in, I agreed with Husband that we should timebox our visit.  I gave myself an hour to get in and get out.  Any longer than that, I just would have disappeared into the place, never to come out.  I think Husband was pretty relieved that he didn’t end up taking leave only to spend a day at the dump.

Next time, I’ll bring my little trolley.

And a trailer.

And my friend Tracey (I promise!)

*Buckminster Fuller was an awesome bloke.  I wish I had been brave enough to name one my own boys after him.
